How AWS access works

OpsBeacon accesses your AWS data through a cross-account IAM role — a standard AWS pattern for granting a third-party read-only access to your account. You create the role in your account; OpsBeacon assumes it when it needs to pull data. OpsBeacon never stores AWS access keys and never has write access to your account.

Required permissions

OpsBeacon needs read access to four AWS services:
Trusted Advisor check results require an AWS account with a Business, Enterprise On-Ramp, or Enterprise support plan. If your account is on Developer or Basic support, Trusted Advisor data will not be available.

Setup steps

1

Open the AWS connection page

After installing the Slack app, you’ll land on the OpsBeacon setup page. Click Connect AWS Account. You’ll see your unique External ID — keep this page open, you’ll need it in step 3.
2

Go to IAM in the AWS Console

In a new tab, open the AWS IAM Console and navigate to Roles → Create role.
3

Create the cross-account role

  1. Select AWS account as the trusted entity type
  2. Select Another AWS account
  3. Enter OpsBeacon’s AWS Account ID: <provided on setup page>
  4. Check Require external ID and paste your unique External ID from the OpsBeacon setup page
  5. Click Next
4

Attach the permissions policy

On the permissions page, click Create inline policy and paste the following JSON:
Name the policy OpsBeaconReadOnly and click Create policy.
5

Name and create the role

Name the role OpsBeaconRole (or any name you prefer), review the settings, and click Create role.
6

Copy the Role ARN

Open the newly created role and copy the Role ARN — it looks like:
7

Paste the Role ARN in OpsBeacon

Return to the OpsBeacon setup page, paste the Role ARN, and click Verify Connection. OpsBeacon will test the role and confirm access.

Verify the connection

Once connected, test it in Slack:
Beacon should return a cost summary within a few seconds.

Multi-account setups

If you manage multiple AWS accounts, you can connect additional accounts after the initial setup. Each account requires its own IAM role. Contact support for guidance on organization-level setups with AWS Organizations.

Revoking access

To disconnect OpsBeacon from your AWS account, delete the OpsBeaconRole IAM role in the AWS Console. This immediately revokes all AWS access.
