# Install OpsBeacon in Slack

> Add Beacon to your Slack workspace in under five minutes.

## Prerequisites

* Slack workspace admin access (required to install apps)
* An OpsBeacon account — [sign up at opsbeacon.co](https://opsbeacon.co)

## Install steps

**1. Go to the install page**

Visit [opsbeacon.co](https://opsbeacon.co) and click **Add to Slack**. You'll be redirected to Slack's OAuth flow.

**2. Authorize the app**

Review the permissions OpsBeacon requests and click **Allow**. You'll be redirected back to the OpsBeacon setup page.

OpsBeacon requests the following Slack permissions:

* `chat:write` — post messages to channels
* `app_mentions:read` — respond when tagged with `@Beacon`
* `channels:read` — list channels so you can choose where reports post
* `users:read` — identify who is asking questions

**3. Choose your reporting channel**

Select the Slack channel where you want Beacon to post reports. Most teams use a dedicated `#cloud-costs` or `#finops` channel. You can change this later.

**4. Invite Beacon to the channel**

In your chosen Slack channel, type:

```
/invite @Beacon
```

This allows Beacon to post there.

**5. Connect your AWS account**

You'll be prompted to connect your AWS account. See [Connect Your AWS Account](https://docs.opsbeacon.co/getting-started/connect-aws.md) for step-by-step instructions.

## Verify the installation

Once installed, run a quick test in Slack:

```
@Beacon hello
```

Beacon should respond with a confirmation message and your workspace status.

## Adding Beacon to additional channels

You can invite Beacon to as many channels as you like:

```
/invite @Beacon
```

Beacon will respond to `@Beacon` mentions in any channel it's been invited to.

## Changing the reporting channel

To update where scheduled reports are posted, mention Beacon in the new channel:

```
@Beacon post reports here
```

## Removing OpsBeacon

To remove OpsBeacon from your Slack workspace, go to **Slack Settings → Manage Apps → OpsBeacon → Remove App**. This revokes all Slack permissions. Your AWS connection remains active until you also remove the IAM role from your AWS account.
